How to Build a Virtual Classroom with Bitmoji and QuaverMusic

I have heard this statement from both faculty and administrators, “They didn’t teach us this in school!” It’s true that in these unprecedented times, teachers are scrambling to keep students engaged and learning from behind a computer screen. One creative idea that has quickly emerged is the Bitmoji Virtual Classroom.
How to Create your Bitmoji Classroom
To start, you will need to access 3 different places, Bitmoji, Google Slides and Google Classrooms, which is the format our school is using. The most fun of these, I found, was Bitmoji.com, where I created my avatar. Once you set up your account, you can create your avatar. I used their app on my phone, snapped my picture, tweaked it a bit and voila!
Next, you should add the Bitmoji extension to your Google Chrome browser. This allows you to choose several different poses of yourself to insert into your classroom scene. It will also let you use it in different applications, if you choose, as well. Once the extension is added, you can just click on the green icon and get a scrolling list of different images.
From there, you will need to navigate to Google Slides. If you are unfamiliar with it, it’s the application similar to Microsoft’s PowerPoint and can be found on the 9-square icon on the top right of your Gmail home page. First, set your background. I happened to choose a stage, but many choose a plain room and add in furniture, etc. The background button can be found above the working space.
Now that you’ve got your background in place, you can add your images. I thought about what I wanted on the stage with me and did a search for those specifically. Try to find images with a clear background so they don’t block the stage. You will notice in my classroom, I have Quaver Street on a tripod, since that is the big thing I wanted students to notice. I opened up my Quaver account and did a screenshot, then imported that image into the slide. For the most part, you’ll go to the Insert menu, choose Image, and then, Search the Web.
Once you have your images in place, click on one, then find the Link option, also under the Insert menu. Copy the URL destination from the browser into the box that pops up. For example, if a student clicks on the Quaver Street image, it will take them directly to the Log In page for Quaver. My other links happen to be You Tube videos, but you can link anywhere you want.
How to Share Your Classroom with Students
Now to share it with your students! I put mine in each Google Classroom under Materials. There is an option to add a file from Google Drive, where your Slides presentations automatically save. I will likely change up the classroom frequently, so I will alert students to that in the Stream. A lot of that will depend on what your school expects and your preferences. Once you share it, though, make sure you put the privacy to Viewer, or students can’t mess with it.
Though I am using this specifically for my QuaverMusic Classroom, this can be adapted in many ways. Take your time with it. Think through what is important to highlight and the tone you want to set. You can also search Google and YouTube for other people’s ideas. That’s how I learned it. Most of all, make your Virtual Classroom as “Seriously Fun” as your real classroom!
